Everyone wants to get blog traffic, especially new blogs. And everyone that’s been blogging for a while will tell you how to get blog traffic. What they mean to say is how they get visitors to their blog.
Not all of the traffic getting tactics out there will work for everyone. It depends on how much content is on your blog and how that content is optimized. It also depends on your internal linking strategy.
For example, if you write a blog post about baby chickens and you have other articles on your blog related to baby chickens you should link those pages together postonmagazine.com . At the end of each article create an h2 tag with the following text: Additional Information on Baby Chickens. Then under that subheading you list your other pages related to baby chickens. Google will pick up on that and you will be on Google’s first page for the keywords baby chickens because you have a lot of content related to that.
I’ve researched this and I do it on my blog where I have several articles that get blog traffic just by being on the first page of the search results. It’s a simple SEO trick.
That’s one way to get blog traffic, here’s another one. Use Google Alerts to let you know when someone writes anything about baby chickens. When those articles and news stories hit the Internet Google will send you an email. When you receive the email it will contain links to the articles and news stories about baby chickens. Click on the first link in your email. When you land on the page immediately scroll down to see if you can leave a comment and a link.
Not all comment boxes allow links. Don’t waste your time if they don’t allow you to leave a link, just move on to an article with a comment box that will allow you to do it. Remember the goal is to drop a link on a relevant site to get blog traffic. People will click on that link and come to your blog. This strategy isn’t spamming. Please don’t do that, you’ll just irritate people. What I do is I read the article and I leave an intelligent comment with a link back to one of my articles.
Make your comment interesting and when you drop your link say, I just posted… This works, trust me. Two days ago I was able to get about 40 people to a blog post I’d written that I wanted to get traffic to quickly. I forgot to mention to also look for a blog that has a lot of people commenting on it.
Most common mistakes that newcomers make happen before the actual blogging even begins. You can’t just throw up a new blog on whatever happens to be on your mind- you need to do a bit of research first. Don’t worry, it really isn’t that difficult and you can have a great outline and plan for a blog within a few minutes if you are proactive.
The first thing to think about is where your content is going to come from. If you are writing the content yourself, which most start-ups do, you need to pick a topic that interests you enough to keep you engaged and provide you with enough material. Preferably, your topic or niche will have a never-ending supply of new events to write about. Any blog that focuses on a fairly broad or popular niche/industry generally has lots of news developments that other blogs and news sites will cover on a daily basis, providing you with talking points and things to write about.
For example, let’s say I have a blog on social media trends. This is a great topic for content because there are a load of new developments in this field all the time that technology blogs and websites cover. You can just subscribe to the RSS feeds of the most prominent blogs in your niche to easily keep tabs on new topics to write about.
However, content isn’t the only thing to consider here. Having a lot to talk about is all well and good, but if there are already way too many blogs in that niche, no one will listen to you or come back to your blog if everyone else is better and more trusted. This is when we go ahead and open up the Google Keyword Tool. Don’t be intimidated by it if you’ve never worked with this kind of thing before, it’s really very simple.
Once you have a few ideas for topics in your head, go ahead and think about what someone would type into Google in order to find a blog like yours. For example, if I wanted to write reviews of video editing software, I might type in “best video editing software” or “user-friendly video editing” or “video editing software review.”
Once you type your keywords in, the Google Keyword Tool will give you stats on that phrase and then 100 more related phrases. You want to pay special attention to the Global Monthly Searches column. If that number is over 30,000 or so, you won’t have a problem finding an audience. This isn’t the only information you need, though. Take a look through the 100 keywords that they gave you and see if you can find one that is more effective than what you had originally planned. This is the time to make changes, down the road it will be a big headache.
Just because you are getting a load of searches on your chosen keywords doesn’t mean you can profit from it. Don’t forget about your competition, those guys have already established websites and blogs and you need to be able to offer something that they can’t and do it better than they can to really keep people following your blog. To get a gauge on your competition, go ahead and type your keywords into plain ordinary Google. First, take a look at the number of sponsored ads. If there is more than 3-4 of them, you probably have lots of competition. Next, take a look at the websites that show up on page one. Can you compete with these guys? Is your blog going to be able to offer something different or better? If you answered yes and you are confident that you have enough sources of content to establish a blog of decent size, then continue on. If not, go back and do some more research until you find a good profitable low-competition niche.
